Change of Use – Educational
A change of use required when a building’s ‘use’ changes from one use to another use.
Every structure has a designated use and class whether it is residential, commercial, or something else. Schools, universities, and other educational facilities occupied by a Registered Training Authority (RTO) fall under Building Class 9b. If the way these structures are used is going to change, a change of use must be obtained through a certified body.
You may even require a change of use for a classroom. This is the case if the classroom is being used for a different purpose, such as a retail space or caretakers residence.
Applying for a change of use can be a confusing process and often requires both a building permit and planning permit. For instance, if an old school is to be redeveloped into housing, both permits are required. This is why working with a registered and experienced building survey is always advisable.
When do I need a change of use for an educational facility?
If the building class of your educational facility is changing, you will need a change of use. That means a change of use for university, or change of use for school. It could be that you are redeveloping the entire building, or just a single room or space.
Do I need a building permit for a change of use for a school or university, and how do I get one?
Yes, you do require a building permit if you wish to convert a building into an educational facility. It’s also likely that you will need a planning permit if you are planning on demolishing, renovating, or redeveloping the building.
Obtaining a building permit and/or a planning permit is much easier with the assistance of an experienced and registered building surveyor. A surveyor will explain the process, and exactly what is required when applying. Then, you can apply for the correct building permit and planning permit through the surveyor.
It’s essential that applying for a change of use, as well as the relevant permits, is done right the first time. Avoiding delays on a new build or redevelopment is almost always a priority.. An experienced building surveyor will ensure the process runs smoothly throughout by assessing your application thoroughly and advising what is required to enable issue of a building permit.
