The timeframes for obtaining a Building Permit varies greatly depending on the information provided in the Application. For example, a more complete Application (and accompanying associated documents) will be processed and issued faster than an incomplete Application where further information must be provided to the Relevant Building Surveyor.
The cost of a building permit differs depending on the type, size, and complexity of a project. However, permits generally start from $1,000.
All building works require a building permit unless exempt by the Building Regulations. Refer to the Victorian Building Authority website and resources for more information.
A Planning Permit Application is assessed against the relevant Planning Scheme, other Planning Legislation and is issued by Council. A Building Permit application is assessed against Building Legislation such as the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, National Construction Code and referenced Australian Standards. A Building Permit can be issued by registered private Building Surveyors or Councils (note, some councils may or may not provide this service).
The building regulations specify what information is required to accompany an application for Building Permit, however the appropriateness of this information may vary depending on the nature of the proposal. At Fitout Permits we require scaled plans to be able to provide a fee proposal and get the process started.
